MULTIPLAYER WORD GAMES

These multiplayer word games pit you not only against the clock but also against live opponents. They are fun and educational -- a perfect use of the communication power of the Internet. But all these games include chat, so please supervise your children and be sure to teach them appropriate safety rules.

Funster

http://www.funster.com/

How many words can you make in three minutes out of letters in the name "John Lennon"? Play What's in a Name? in one of the Free-For-All rooms and you'll get points for all words you make, or in the Speedster rooms where only the first player to propose a word gets the point. I really liked Word Know-It-All, a timed vocabulary game that can be played at a variety of speeds.

Mind Fun

http://www.mindfun.com/chat/

Mind Fun brings us two Java word games. Word Web is a timed scrambled-word game, with 25 letters connected with web-like strands. To form words you can either type them into the text box or drag your mouse over the letters. You'll immediately see your word and its value (one point for four-letter words, two points for five-letter words, and so on) on the scoreboard. Cerebral Vortex is a trivia game ("Cultivated for its long edible root, it's the pale unpopular cousin to the carrot"), with letters appearing Hangman style (-- - S - I -) as the timer counts down. (The answer is PARSNIP.)

Playsite

http://www.playsite.com

The Java scrambled-word game Tangleword is fast and addictive and an all-time favorite at our house. You can play as a guest, but registered users (registration is free) can participate in chat during game play and get a rating that increases or decreases with play. The Tangleword board is a five-by-five square of letters. Words are formed by either typing or dragging your mouse. If you run dry, try the "Rotate" button -- possible letter combinations won't change, but your view of the board will.

Silent Sometimes Y

http://www.headbone.com/games/sometimesy/

Sometimes Y (as in "a-e-i-o-u and sometimes y") challenges you to make as many words by adding vowels to the supplied constants (for example from "dn" you can form "done," "need," "nod" and so on). Headbone Zone's Sometimes Y game is the only one of today's sites that includes supervised chat. Here's how it works: during chat hours (11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Pacific time) you'll find the chat-version of Sometimes Y accessible at http://www.headbone.com/chat/. Silent Sometimes Y, however, is always open. Although there is no free-form chat in the silent version, you can use AutoGab to send preselected phrases ("Hey, everyone!" or "I can't believe I won!") to your opponents.

Word Zap

http://wordzap.com/

Word Zap (create as many words from a combination of letters as possible) requires a software download (and isn't always free), but rewards you with a wide range of playing options (some of which are free). This is a game you can play without an Internet connection, or you can play against live opponents via ICQ or Igames.com. When is Word Zap free? Always on Sundays, and always if you play on ICQ or Igames.com. When do you need to pay the $25 registration fee? If you plan to play off-line or over a local area network on days other than Sundays. Whew!

From: www.NBC739.com 9-15-99:

Hot soak may help diabetes patients

LOVELAND, Colo. - A soak in the hot tub may be just what the doctor ordered for the 14 million Americans who have diabetes.

A study that will appear in Thursday's Journal of the American Medical Association shows that soaking in a hot tub can reduce blood sugar levels by 13 percent. Researchers say hot tub therapy may simulate the effects of exercise, reducing the need for insulin.

Most volunteers in the small pilot study done by the McKee Medical Center said that a hot soak made them feel and sleep better. But it didn't work on everyone. Some volunteers got dizzy and had to be helped from the spa.

Directory assistance on the web by Beth Tornatore

SAN DIEGO - When you pick up a telephone to get a friend's number in New York, or a business number right here in town, you now have multiple options for directory assistance. The trick is getting the number you need for the best cost.

<Picture><Picture> Consumer advocates say dialing 411 is still your best option for local searches. Most calling plans give you several free local information calls every month. But after that, you'll be charged 25 cents for local numbers and at least 95 cents for numbers outside your calling area.

For long distance numbers, most people are used to dialing the area code followed by 555-1212. That will cost you $1.40 for two numbers. But experts say there are cheaper alternatives.

"You can call 10-10-9000. That's MCI's service. You can call 10-10-00-INFO and that's AT&T's service," Ellen Braitman of Consumer Reports said. "Both of them cost 99 cents. You can get two listings. And they will connect you to the number that you want."

But watch out! That automatic connection may cost you extra. If you're not an MCI or AT&T customer, you could be charged as much as 28 cents a minute during peak times.

Of course, you may be able to find the numbers you need for free on the Internet. There are quite a few web directories that will let you search for telephone numbers, e-mail addresses and mailing addresses all over the country. To give them a try, follow the Internet links below.
